Safety Info

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION – PLEASE READ

The Fairburn Safety Committee is continually working to ensure the safety of our children in the event of an emergency during school hours.  We are writing so you will understand – in advance – what is being done to keep your children safe.

CAMPUS EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

In the event of an emergency, the campus is closed to all parents and the public until: 1) the safety of all students has been assured; and 2) systems and procedures have been set in motion for the orderly release of students to parents (or people named on the student’s emergency card). Depending on the exact nature of the emergency, children and staff will be either: 1) evacuated to the yard, (e.g., earthquake); or 2) kept in their classroom (Protected Campus aka “lockdown”).

PARENTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ON CAMPUS.  Children will be released, but not until full search and rescue operations have been completed.  It may take several hours to set up release procedures and complete search and rescue operations.  We urge your patience and cooperation in this regard.

Teachers and Safety Committee volunteers will remain with the children until everyone has been picked up.  Adults picking up children must show picture identification at the “REQUEST GATE” which will be located on Westholme Avenue.  Children will exit from the “REUNION GATE” which will be located on Ohio Avenue.

This year the Safety Committee is not recommending that you purchase or bring emergency kits to school. The Safety Committee has arranged for the purchase of shelf-stable emergency food supplies that will be stored on campus. There is no longer any need for you to provide the school with a three-day emergency supply of food/water for your child.

However, if your child is required to take a medication on a daily basis, please provide a three-day supply of the medication to the main office. Please place the medication in a quart-size Ziploc bag and place your child’s name, emergency phone number, and dosage information on a piece of paper inside the bag. The office staff will store these medications in the main office for use in the event of an emergency.

If you wish, especially if you have a child in Kindergarten or first or second grade, you may wish to supply the school with some “comfort” items for your child in the event of an emergency. These items might include a note from you, a small toy or book, a family photograph, or a food that you know your child likes to eat (please make sure the food is shelf-stable and will not attract pests).  Please place these items in a gallon Ziploc bag and give them to your child’s teacher no later than October 2nd.

Please know that the Safety Committee has adequate emergency supplies stored in the large trailer near the cafeteria that will be available to meet needs of all students if they are kept at school in the event of an emergency. Emergency roles for staff and procedures are established and rehearsed. During an actual event, only those parents who serve on the Safety Committee will be admitted to the campus. Your patient understanding will ensure the safe and orderly processing of your child and everyone else’s.

REMINDER ON CAMPUS VISITS

Please be sure to sign in with the office and get a yellow identification tag when entering campus. It is for our students’ safety and yours – in the event of a campus protection incident or other emergency, we need the sign-in list to account for all visitors.

DON’T FORGET TO TURN IN YOUR EMERGENCY CARD!
